After a restful Christmas break, the class of 2019 welcomed a new knight to the brotherhood– Allen Cheng’19. Cheng is an international student coming from north eastern China, and this is his first time coming to U.S for school.

In the end it was setback brought Cheng to Mount Michael.

“Initially I was planning to come to U.S. as a freshman, but some of my documents had a little problem, so I waited for another year.” Allen said, “ Then, my grandfather’s brother recommended Mount Michael.”

Cheng’s “ grandfather’s brother” happens to be a doctor in Iowa, and his daughter married an American professor in Omaha, that’s how he knew about Mount Michael.

“Then I e-mailed Mount Michael to schedule a skype meeting with Mr. Pritchard,” Allen said, “After the informational meeting, I thought Mount Michael is great.”

The moment Cheng saw our school building, his imagination started to take over.

“ I thought I would have single-person dorm with king sized lengthened bed, a living room joining two student’s bedroom so that they are roommates, and a separate restroom for each pair of student.” Allen said, “But then I opened my dorm’s door…”  he stopped and laughed, implying that the reality is never ideal.

Also, he is probably the fastest Chinese student to get used to MM foods. On the very first day he gave a very positive comment on the school’s lunch.

“There’s really not much to say,” Allen said, “ I just really liked it.”

Apart from all the material factors, what Allen really enjoyed is the community here. When  asked how would he rate aspects of Mount Michael life on a scale of 1-10, he gave a 10 to “community” immediately while giving “hardware” a 7 and “academics” an 8.

Allen indicated that everyone was very friendly, including the teachers.

“They are all willing to help me when I’m confused as a newcomer.” He said. “I felt welcomed the moment I came here, it’s really good.”
