The varsity soccer team is already preparing for the upcoming soccer season.  They have been participating in an indoor high school soccer league hosted by The Center (an indoor sports complex) since the end of Oct.

Midfielder Luke Van Haute ‘18 and winger Paul McCaslin ‘18 convinced the team to participate in this league, and there are 19 members in total on the team.

“I really hope to play in [the indoor soccer league] can give people experience and be a great warmup for our season,” Van Haute said.

The league cannot be coached by anyone who participates in the coaching staff of the school, and it also cannot be required, since school-sanctioned soccer activities cannot start until the beginning of the season.  However, this is not an impediment to the team’s experience.  According to McCaslin, the “players enjoy coaching themselves.”

The Knight’s first game was on Oct. 28 against Elkhorn South.  According to goalie Temi Adeyemo ‘19, the team played “with lots of energy, but [they were] a bit disunified.”  The final score was 4-3, with Elkhorn South scoring in the last few minutes to take the lead.

During the first session, the Knights faced opponents like Omaha North and Lewis Central.  One exciting game was an  8-2 victory against Blair.

“Since the first game we played, I think we have improved a lot.  We play faster and the team plays better together,”  winger Carson Leahy ‘19 said.

According to Van Haute, the team hopes to improve their tempo and chemistry.

“There was some friction on the team last year.  I hope that doing the league can build team chemistry,” Van Haute said.

Adeyemo agrees.

“You know these other teams are trying, out to win. And I mean, it’s nice to win, but we are there to get experience and have fun, and we sometimes win as a result of that,” Adeyemo said.

The team hopes to continue this forward momentum into next indoor session by adding a junior varsity team and continuing a varsity indoor season.
