If I’m being honest with you guys, I would say NO to summer homework so fast that it would shatter the speed of sound and make light run for its money. However, it would be unfair of me to just say homework is awful without at least telling you why.

One of the main reasons I dislike summer homework is that sometimes it can be just plain useless. I understand it is there to help students prepare for next year’s hard, in-depth courses, but if a teacher assigns a two week long assignment that results in hand cramps, I want nothing to do with it.

I do appreciate that at least some teachers give a heads up, so I can plan my summer a bit more efficiently. But, I am terrified at the thought of a teacher that goes around handing out huge packets of summer work the day before final exams.

Just imagine the horror. Poor defenseless students stare out of despair at the fifty-something page packet of equations. Their eyes, fighting back tears, glance at the top of the first page, where it reads in big and bold font: SUMMER HOMEWORK. Two words that can ruin a precious summer break in an instant.

In my book, some teachers have good reasons to hand out summer work. If it is in preparation for a really difficult course next year, I am cool with it. One teacher has my green light. Dr. Randy Crnkovich, who teaches biology, AP biology, and anatomy, assigns summer work to people preparing for his AP course.

I also appreciate Spanish teacher Beth Shanahan’s, approach. She believes that students should keep their language skills active over the summer, but doesn’t think assigned work is the way to go. She would rather students listen to Spanish music instead of Spanish listening exercises.

While I still think the advantages of summer homework are not as big as some teachers claim, I do believe there is some value to keeping a student’s mind active over the summer. I just feel that it doesn’t need to be like school is coming home for the summer. Breaks are just as important to the learning process as school itself.
